Recent findings from a study conducted by the Charité show that spermidine can inhibit the propagation of SARS-CoV-2. Spermidine activates autophagy, thereby inhibiting viral replication. As the authors of the current publication show, SARS- CoV-2 inhibits autophagy in infected cells. This puts a stop to this protective mechanism in cells and the virus is able to spread unhindered.
